As a principal singer for the Clearwater-based Sunstate Opera (now known as Tampa Bay Opera), soprano, Julia Coulmas performed many roles including Violetta (La Traviata), Mimi (La Boheme), Nedda (I Pagliacci), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) and Cio-Cio-San in a collaborative production of Madama Butterfly with the FloriMezzo Orchestra.
From 2008-2010, Julia sang the roles of Helmwig (Die Walkure) and the woodland bird (Siegfried) as part of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, as well as the Goddess of Love (Orpheus and Eurydice) with the New Century Opera of Tarpon Springs, Florida - Directed by Constantine Grame.
In 2002, Julia began to share her passion for opera by founding Youth Opera Appreciation. She traveled to community centers, libraries and schools where she lectured and performed for both children and adults about the beauty and history of opera.
Julia’s passion for opera history has taken her to Europe, where she is currently researching the life of Brazilian opera singer Bidu Sayao and creating a multi-media performance based on her discovery and journey.
